The
27 bed skilled nursing unit was placed within an existing pinwheel shaped
medical surgical patient floor. All
of the rooms were single bedrooms, with undersized bathrooms.
The center of the floor contained all of the utility functions of a
standard medical/surgical patient floor.
The intent of the design was to take this floor and create social
spaces for the residents as well as updating the patient bathrooms to
accommodate wheelchairs and mobility impaired residents.
The main nurse station was renovated to act as a new reception area.
To soften the character of the former patient floor, arches and
sconces were added to break up the long expanses of corridor, and provide
a visual rhythm.
The abandoned core functions were removed to form a common “Village
Green”, a central social space in which all of the residents could
gather. Windows were added
between this space and the corridor, so that residents can have a sense of
participation with the other residents, and the activities occurring on
the floor.
An
informal sitting area was created outside the “Village Green” allowing
for small gatherings within the circulation, encouraging another area for
social interaction. Adjacent
to this area is the laundry area, which provides an important activity as
part of the social area.
